dc.description.abstract Writing is the production of the written word that results in a text but the text must be read and comprehended in order for communication to talk place. The teacher can take some strategies in teaching writing, so it will help students to write in effective and strategic way. One of teaching strategy is Think Pair Share (TPS) for teaching writing and the purpose is to improve the students writing ability. The objective of this research is to describe whether the use of think pair share is effective or not for teaching writing This research was conducted at SMP N 40 Purworejo from November 23rd until Desember 2nd. 2017. The researcher used quntitative with pre-experimental research.The population of this research is 160 at the eighth grade student of SMP N 40 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The sample of this research is 32, VIII A consists of 32 students. The sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling. Then, this research used test as the instrument. The reasearcher used descriptive anlaysis as the technique of anlayzing data. The researher found that the result of t-value is 4.635. Baesd on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is 1.82. The result of computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 4.635>1.82. Another fact shows that the technique used is effective. The mean score of pre-test is 67.31. Meanwhile, the mean of post-test is 77.22. It means that there are significant improvement between pre-test and post-test (9.9). It can be stated that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Therefore, the conclusion is the use of Think Pair Share is effective for teaching writing at the eighth grade of SMP N 40 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. en_US
