Abstract:
Language is a system of meaningful sounds, words, consensus or others
which are used in communication. Some language components are grammar,
vocabulary, phonology, and pronounciation. Vocabulary is one of the important
language aspects of foreign language teaching and learning. They should use
method and teaching media that appropriate and fun to learner on teaching
learning process. One of method that use in this research is Pair Check Method.
Pair Check is deviding students into some groups consisting of two students,
solving problem by each group and checking result of the discussion by other
groups. The objective of this research is to describe whether the use of Pair Check
Method is effective or not for teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of
SMP N 40 Purworejo in the academic year 2016/2017.
This research belongs to quantitave research using experimental design.
This research consists of two variables; independent variable and dependent
variable. The independent variable of this research is teaching vocabulary using
pair check. Then, the dependent variable of this research is the students‟
vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was the seventh grade
students of SMP N 40 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017 with the total
number 160. The sampleof this research onsisted of 32 students. The technique of
the data collection was using test. It was done by giving pre-test and post-test.
Meanwhile, the technique of data analysis used descriptive analysis and inferential
analysis. The inferential analysis was done by using SPSS.
The result of the research shows that the mean score of pre-test is 64.62.
Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test is 77.56. To see whether the hypothesis is
accepted or rejected, z-value is consulted to z-table at the 0.05 significance level.
It shows that z-table is5.215 and z-value is1.82. It means that z-value ishigher
than z-table, that is5.215>1.82. Therefore, it can be stated that the hypothesis
“pair checkmethod is effective in teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade
students of SMP N 40Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017” is accepted.
