Abstract:
Translation is the process of transferring ideas or material from one language
to another one. Most of students have difficulties to write in English due to
English as their foreign language. Nowadays, there are some students who can
speak English but they cannot write English sentences well. Morever, they have
difficulties to translate Indonesia texts into English ones. Students also make some
error in translating Indonesian texts into English ones.Error occurs when learner
misunderstand the sentences he translates.
This research took 31 students of the eleventh grade students of SMK Yapek
Gombong,Kebumen as a sample. The objective of the study are to describe the
type of errors and to know the causes of errors on the use of tenses made by the
students in translating Indonesian sentences into English ones. The research
belongs to the qualitative research. The type of this research is descriptive
qualitative method with written test and interview as the instruments.The first
meeting is to conduct a written test, and the second oneis to conduct an interview.
To describethe type of error, the researcher uses the percentage to analyze the
data.
The researcher manages to present the result of the research. The type of error
on the use of tenses in translating Indonesian sentences into English ones in this
research are omission (37.84%), addition (26.29%), misformations (33.17%), and
misordering (2.7%). The causes of error are intralingual error caused by his/her
target language and interlingual error caused by interference from his/her mother
tongue.It implies that students have to learn tenses more intensively.They should
differenciate the rule of Indonesian sentences and English ones.
