dc.description.abstract English is one of the most widely used International language. English is a link language. It has greatly contributed to the advancement of learning. There are four skills in teaching English, speaking, reading, listening, and writing. The objective of this study is aimed at knowing students’ ability in speaking English and finding out whether the use of Situational Language Method is effective or not in teaching speaking at the seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. This research belongs to a quasi experimental research with non equivalent control group design. This research is carried out in May 2016. The researcher takes two groups of the students at the SMPN 4 Purworejo at the academic year of 2015/2016 namely VIIE and VIIF classes as the sample using purposive sampling. The experimental group consists of 32 students, and the control group also consists of 32 students. The data will be collected by using oral test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test. After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that the use of Situational Language Method in teaching speaking at the seventh grade students of SMP N 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective. As the fact, the result of t-value is 12.647. Based on the 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table is 1.999. The result of computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 12.647>1.999. Another fact shows that the method used is effective. It is shown by the mean of post-tes that is higher than the mean of pre-test. In the pos-test, the mean is 64. On the contrary, the mean of pre-test is 52.06. Based on the result finding, the researcher concluded that the used of Situational Language Method in teaching speaking as a teaching method is effective in teaching speaking at the seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. It can be shown that the students’ speaking mastery increased. en_US
