Abstract:
The objective of this research is to describe whether or not using
speed reading is effective in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of
SMP Negeri 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. In this study,
the researcher takes class VIII A which consists of 31 students as
experimental group, and class VIII B which consists of 31 students as
control group.
The researcher uses purposive sampling to gain the data of the
research because the researcher takes the sample of two classes to be
observed in collecting the data, the researcher uses test method. To analyze
the data, the researcher uses descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
The result shows that the hypothesis is accepted. It means that using
speed reading in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of SMP
Negeri 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017 is effective. It can be
seen that the mean score of the post-test of experimental group is higher
than the mean score of post-test of control group (80.97>73.03). As the fact,
the mean score of pos-test of experimental group is 80.97 and the category
is excellent. The mean score of post-test of control group is 73.03 and the
category is good. In addition, the result of t-value is 4.385. Then, the
researcher consults the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha
significance and the degree of freedom is 2.000. It shows that t-value is
higher than t-table (4.385>2.000). The sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 and the
significance level is 0.05. It means that sig. (2-tailed< 0.05).
