The Analysis of Filler Words Used in “God’s Not Dead” Movie and Its Application in Teaching Speaking

dc.description.abstract Fillers are expression like um, uh,well, oh, you know, I mean that used in speech to fill in pauses. It is occur when speaker think or hesitate during their speech. The aims of this research are to identify and to describe the types of filler words, the functions of filler words in God’s Not Dead movie, and the application of teaching speaking using filler words found in God’s Not Dead movie. Researcher uses a qualitative method to conduct this research. The object of this research is movie, and the data are the characters’ utterances in God’s Not Dead movie containing filler words. The data are collected through take a note and observation technique. Furthermore, the utterances are analyzed to describe and to explain in detail the phenomena of utterances based on filler words theory. However, number and percentage are also used to support the analysis of the data. The research reveals three findings. First, there are two types of filler words in the movie, namely Filled Pauses (FPs) and Discourse Markers (DMs). The first type is FPs with 10 data (10.53%). The last type is DMs with 85 data (89.47%). Second, the researcher finds five functions of filler words in the movie, namely filling the pause (FTP), holding a conversation turn (HACT), empathizing (E), mitigating (M), and editing term (ET). There is FTP with 10 data (10.53%), HACT with 40 data (42.11%), E with 12 data (12.63%), M with 23 data (24.21%), and ET with 10 data (10. 53%). Third, the researcher finds that type of filler words, discourse markers can implement to teach speaking in giving opinion especially in filler words in class activity. Filler words are one of important material which should be taught by teacher, especially in speaking. There are many examples of filler words which found in the movie. It can be used to teach speaking in giving opinion in vocational high school at second grade. By using movie, students may know more about filler words in English and students can also know that the usage of certain type of filler words in conversation have a certain function depend on the context. en_US
