Abstract:
Reading is process of creating meaning. When students are reading
English text, they are demanded to have adequate knowledge of the target
language which has different system. Narrative text is considered as an interesting
text. A story grammar is the system of rules used for describing the consistent
feature found in narrative text.
The objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of using story
grammar strategy to teach reading narrative text at the eighth grade students of
SMP N 23 Purworejo. The type of this research is quantitative pre-experimental
research. The researcher takes 32 students as a sample of research. In collecting
the data, researcher uses some steps: making instrument, validity testing, giving
pre-test, conducting treatment, and giving post-test. While in analyzing the data,
the researcher uses descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
The result of this research shows that using Story Grammar strategy is
effective to improve students’ ability in reading. It can be seen from the mean
score of pre-test 67.97 and the mean of post-test 73.91. It also shows that the tvalue
is higher than t-table with df (32-1), it is (3.41>2.04). It means that using
story grammar strategy in the teaching learning process gives a positive
contribution towards the students’ skill in reading. The result of research finding
proved that the Hypothesis of research (Ha) is accepted.
