dc.description.abstract Language is a tool for connecting social interaction in human life. Pragmatics is the study of language. The objectives of the research are to describe the types of maxims are flouted to describe the application of maxims in The Cat in the Hat movie in teaching speaking in the second grade of senior high school. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative approach because the researcher analyzed the data and then He described the finding as to answer research question. The researcher attempts to analyze flouting maxims because observing maxims is very important in order to make successful and meaningful conversations. The result of maxim flouting in The Cat in the Hat movie is 21 times. Here, the maxim of quantity is flouting 12 (57.14%). The maxim relevance is flouting 7 times (33.33%). The maxim manner is flouting 2 (9.52%). The maxim quality is flouting 0 times (-). The maxim of quality there are not be able because the film is aimed at children and contain values in accordance with the truth of the facts. Application can be the role of the teacher is to understand the importance of providing pragmatic information. The researcher suggests this research helps the teachers and students to demonstrate speaking skill. The researcher hopes this research can make deep understanding in pragmatic especially flouting maxims. en_US
