Abstract:
Writing is important in learning English. In SMP, the purpose of teaching
English is to make students able to use language to fulfill their daily activities
such as listening, reading, speaking and writing and four language components
such as grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling. In spite of that there are
many students commonly consider writing as a difficult activity because English
is their foreign language.
Chain Story is one of techniques which can be applied by the teacher to
improve students’ writing of recount text.
The objectives of study is intended whether the student Chain Story was
effective or not to teach writing recount text at the eighth grade of SMPN 14
Purworejo. In this research, the researcher took 64 students as the sample. As the
experimental group, the researcher used class VIII B which consists of 32
students. Meanwhile as control group, the researcher used class VIII F which
consists of 32 students. Then the resercher gave pre-test and post-test to both
classes. The researcher taught recount text by giving assigment to write their
Chain Story to experimental group and common way to control group.
Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
From the data analysis, the researcher concludes that Chain Story is
effective to improve students’ writing of recount text. As a matter of fact, the
result of t-value is 3,37 based on the 5% (0.05) significant levels, the value of ttable
is 2.000 the result of computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table,
that is 3,37 > 2.000. Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that using
chain story in teaching writing of recount text at the eighth grade of SMPN 14
Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective.
