Abstract:
This study was conducted under consideration that past tense plays
important role in writing past experience. This thesis has three objectives. First, it
aims to identify the error categories of word choice in writing recount textat
Seventh Semester of English Education Program Purworejo Muhammadiyah
University in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. Second, it aims to discover the
frequency of errors. And third, it is aimed at finding out the dominant error.
This thesis uses descriptive qualitative as the research design. The subject
of the research was the seventh Semester of English Education Program
Purworejo Muhammadiyah University in the Academic Year of 2016/2017which
consisted of 17 students. The subject of the research is taken from Based-Genre
Writing in short-semester class. The instrument that the researcher uses to collect
the data is written test.
The result of the study shows that students made deviations in word
choice. In superficial categories, the total errors of each kind are 32 (19.51%)
errors in morphosyntactic categories and 46 (25.04%) errors in pragmatic (register
and text deictic) categories. Meanwhile, in complementary categories, there are,
13 (7.93%) errors in lexical semantic problems, 3 (1.82%) errors in collocational
problems, and 3 (1.82%) errors in logicality, overlap, and topic knowledge
categories. The other result of this research shows that the most dominant
difficulty made by students in writing recount text was lexical syntactic problems
with 67errors (40.85%).
