Abstract:
The aim of this research is to know the level of students’ speaking skill at
the eighth grade students of SMP N 20 Purworejo in the academic year of
2016/2017. Besides, the other aim of this research is to find out whether Focus
Group Discussion Method is effective or not in teaching speaking at the eighth
grade students of SMP N 20 Purworejo.
This research is classified as pre experimental research. Moreover, this
research is conducted by using quantitative technique in processing the data and
getting the result. Therefore, the type of this research is experimental quantitative
research. In this research, the researcher took 32 students at the eighth grade
students of SMP N 20 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The
researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. The researcher usesFocus Group
Discussion as the method to teach speakimg. Statistically, the researcher analyzed
the data by using t-test.
The result of this research shows that The result of this research shows that
Focus Group Discussion Methodis effective for teaching speaking for the eighth
grade students of SMP N 20 Purworejo in the Academic year of 2016/2017, since
it was found that the result of t-test is -15.952 based on 0.05 significance level,
and the value of t-table
