Abstract:
This research is aimed to find out the effectiveness of using simulation
strategy in teaching speaking. Here, the researcher has question to be answered. Is
using simulation strategy effective in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade
students of SMA NEGERI 1 Samigaluh Kulon Progo in the Academic Year of
2016/2017?
The population of the research is the eleventh grade students of SMA
NEGERI 1 Samigaluh Kulon Progo in the Academic Year of 2016/2017 which
consists of 79 students and the amount of the sample is 52 students. Sample is
taken by using purposive sampling technique. The independent variable of the
research is using simulation strategy and the dependent variable of the research is
the students’ speaking ability. The instrument that is used to get the data is oral
test. The techniques of analyzing the data are descriptive statistics in finding
mean, standard deviation, mode, median; and inferential analysis is used to prove
the hypothesis test.
The result shows that using simulation strategy in teaching speaking at the
eleventh grade students of SMA NEGERI 1 Samigaluh Kulon Progo in the
Academic Year of 2016/2017 is ineffective. From the computation, it can be seen
that mean score of experimental class is lower than the mean score of control class
(52.00<52.22).
It is known that the result of post-test shows that the mean score of experimental
group is 52.00 and the mean of control group is 52.22. Both of them are
categorized as fairly sufficient with difference mean of -0,22. Moreover, the result
of mean score of post-test in experimental group is lower than pre-test
(52.00<52.22). It is also proven from the result of z-test, because of the data is
abnormal distribution and homogenous the researcher uses u test and z-test. The
result shows that the value of zvalue (0.233) is lower than the value of ztable in
significance degree 5% (1.96) or 0.233<1.96. It can be concluded that using
simulation strategy is ineffective in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade
students of SMA NEGERI 1 Samigaluh Kulon Progo in the Academic Year of
2016/2017.
