Abstract:
This research is categorized as qualitative research. The aim of this thesis are to categorize the request strategies found in The Guardian movie and to apply it in teaching speaking at the tenth grade of senior high school. This research was focused on analysis of request strategies and categorized it into some types. Then apply it in teaching speaking at the tenth grade of senior high school.
The instruments of the research used are is movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative data analysis. The technique of collecting data are 1) Downloading The Guardian movie 2) Watching and closely observing The Guardian movie 3) Reading the movie script 4) Marking the dialogue that contain request.In analyzing the data the researcher applies descriptive method. The researcher goes through the following steps 1)Classifiying the data finding which contain request strategies into four categories of request strategies 2) Making the interpretation and analysis of each data based on four categories of request strategies theory stated by Anna Trosborg.
The result shows that the data are classified into four categories. From 45 data which are taken by the researcher, 2 (4.44 %) data belongs to Indirect request, 8 (17.77 %) data belongs to Conventionally indirect (hearer-oriented conditions), 8 (17.77 %) data belongs to Conventionally indirect (speaker-based conditions), and 27 (60 % ) data belongs to Direct request. The application of this study can be applied in teaching speaking in the X grade senior high school semester 1. The material which is closely related with Expressions of Relief, Pain, Pleasure, Giving and Fulfilling Requests. Teacher can use utterances contain request strategies in the movie to teach short functional text such as dialogue and spoken language.
