dc.description.abstract This research was conducted at MAN 1 Kutowinangun in the academic year of 2016/2017. The objective of this research is how is the pronunciation of pure vowels and diphthongs produce by the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kutowinangun in reading narrative text in the academic year of 2016/2017. The sample of this research is 20 students of the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kutowinangun. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research because the researcher made the descriptions toward the finding of collecting the data. This research was conducted by observing the authentic documents of the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kutowinangun in case to get real result. The result of this research shows that from 20 students there are mispronunciation of pure vowels [I], [Ʊ], [æ], [ɒ], [Ʌ], [ɜ:], and [ə]. There are 56 times incorrect pronunciation of pure vowels [ɒ] made by the students. Then its‘ following by mispronunciation of pure vowel [I] with 38 times. The third place is mispronunciation of pure vowel [ɜ:] with 28 times. The percentage of incorrect pronunciation of words with pure vowel [ɒ] is the highest percentage, which is 37%. Then its‘ following by mispronunciation of pure vowel [I] with 25%. The third place is mispronunciation of pure vowel [ɜ:] with 19%. The incorrect pronunciation of diphthongs made by the students attains result that students mispronounced the diphthong /əʊ/ for 19 times. Then on the second place the diphthong /iǝ/ pronounced incorrectly for 16 times. The third place is diphthong /ei/ that pronounced incorrectly for 10 times. On the other hand, the percentage of incorrect pronunciation of the words with diphthong /əʊ/ is as the highest percentage, which is 35%. Then its‘ following by mispronunciation of diphthong /iǝ/ with 30%. The third place is mispronunciation of diphthong /ei/ with 19%. en_US
