dc.description.abstract This research is aimed to find out at the linguistic features of signs in public area. The researcher tries to apply linguistic features of signs as a media to teach speaking in seventh grade of junior high school students. Signs in public area are widely used in our daily life. Presented notices with words and/or pictures, which are used to tell and direct the public can be regarded as public signs. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher takes the data from signs in public area found in surrounding. The steps of collecting data are observing signs, taking pictures of signs, and selecting data and analyzing the linguistic features from the signs in public area. The result of this research are: 4 Capital Letters (5.71%), 8 Doubling Final Consonants (11.43%), 17 Noun Phrase (24.29%), 4 Verb Phrase (5.71%), 1 Adjective Phrase (1.43%), 4 Adverb Phrase (5.71%), 11 Prepositional Phrase (15.71%), and 21 grammatical (30%). The application of analyzing linguistic features of signs in public area found in surrounding can be implemented at the seventh grade students of junior high school. It is about expression of asking, giving idea and opinion. The researcher hopes that this thesis will give advantages to the readers. en_US
