Abstract:
The objectives of the research are to describe the level of students’ writing
ability of descriptive text and to find out whether using outdoor classroom activity is
effective or not for teaching descriptive text at seventh grade of SMPN 18 Purworejo in
academic year of 2016/2017.
In this research the researcher took 64 students as the sample. As the
experimental group, the researcher used class 7E which consists of 32 students.
Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 32 students of class 7F. Then the
researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught descriptive
text by using outdoor classroom activity method to experimental group and control
group by indoor classroom using PPP method (Presentation, Practice, and production).
The researcher then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test.
The result of the analysis data showed that the mean of score from
experimental group is 71.38 and it was belongs to good category. The mean of score
control group is 62.72 and it is sufficient category. It can be concluded that the score
from experimental group is higher than control group. In addition, the result of ttestshowed
that t-value (sig.2-tailed) is 0.00 at the 95% confidence interval of the
differences. It is significance because the sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.00<0.05)
Based on the result of t-test findings, it can be stated that the hypothesis “the use of
outdoor classroom activity in teaching writing descriptive text at seventh grade of SMPN
18 Purworejo in academic year 2016/2017 is accepted”.
