Abstract:
This research is a pragmatic study about performative verbs used in Akeelah and the Bee movie. The aim of this research is to identify the types of performative verbs used inAkeelah and the Bee movie and the application of performative verbs found in Akeelah and the Bee movie for teaching speaking in the tenth grade of senior high school.
This research uses qualitative design because the researcher would like to describe the performative verb found in Akeelah and the Bee movie and to describe the application of performative verb in Akeelah and the Bee movie in teaching speaking.
Based on cruse theory the researcher found 2 (6.06%) of assertive performative verbs, 4 (12,12%) of commisive performative verbs, 11 (33.33%) of directive performative verbs, and 16 (48.48%) of expressive performativ verbs. The total performative verbs found in Akeelah and the Bee movie is 33 items.The researcher can conclude that the highest usage of performative verbs in Akeelah and Bee movie is expressive performative verbs with 16 frequencies and gain 48.48 %.On the other hand, based on Ortega theory, the researcher found out that from 33 items, there are two kinds of spoken performative verbs, they are implicit and explicit performative verbs. The researcher can found 22 explicit performative verbs and 11 implicit performative verbs. Then from 33 performative verbs found in the movie, there are 22 explicit performative verbs used and gain 66.67%.
The usage of performative verbs in Akeelah and the Bee movie can be applied in teaching and learning English, particularly in teaching speaking using present tense. The students asked to create present tense using the subject I and the verb is performative verbs. Then ask them to practice it in the dialogue.
