Abstract:
Language has function to communicate and exchange information from someone to the others. In the process of communication, message is stated explicitly and implicitly for example by using figurative language. Figurative language is language that uses figure of speech. It is arrangement of sentences that has more than one meaning. One of the messages which need to have the right understanding is Al-Qur’an. The messages in Al-Qur’an are stated explicitly and implicitly by using figurative languages. This study investigates the use of figurative language involved in the translation of surah Ar-Rahman. The objectives of this study are to find out the variations and the most dominant figurative language used in English Translation of Al-Qur’an Surah Ar-Rahman and its application to teach reading.
This study used descriptive qualitative approach because this analysis had done something with language research. The data were collected from the English translation in NobleQuran.com. The researcher used documentation method to collect the data. She did the steps such as reading, indicating, signing, collecting, and coding the data.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that there are five types of figurative languages that can be found in English translation of Al-Qur’an surah Ar-Rahman. They are simile 4 with percentage 28.6%, each of metonymy and personification 3 times with percentage 21.4%, and each of apostrophe and synecdoche 2 times with percentage 14.3%. So, there are five kinds of figurative languages that are used in English translation of surah Ar-Rahman. The figurative language that is most used is simile 4 times with percentage 28.6%. The application of this research is contributing as additional material in learning reading in senior high school grade XI semester I.
