dc.description.abstract This research is conducted to know whether using language game of Spelling Bee as a strategy in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017 is effective or not. This is quantitative research with quasi experimental as its design that using pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017 which consists of 258 students and the amount of the sample is 62 students. Sample is taken by using purposive sampling technique. The independent variable of the research is using Spelling Bee game and the dependent variable of the research is the student’s reading comprehension. The instrument that is used to get the data is multiple choices test which consists of 25 questions with 4 options. From the computation, it is known that the result of post-test shows that the mean score of experimental group is 79.61 (overall to 80) categorized as excellent and the mean of control group is 77.68 categorized as good based on the criteria-reference scale of Arikunto (2009: 245). Because the data is abnormal distribution and it is not homogenous, the researcher uses u-test and z-test. The result of z-test shows that the value of zvalue (0.591) is lower than the value of ztable in significance degree 5% (1.96) or 0.591< 1.96. It can be concluded that using language game of Spelling Bee as a strategy is ineffective in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. en_US
