Abstract:
This research aimed at analyzing types of maxim cooperative principle found in
Beauty and the Beast movie and its application in teaching speaking to the
eleventh grade students of senior high school. The objectives of the research are to
describe types of cooperative principle performed by the characters in Beauty and
the Beast movie and how was the application in teaching speaking to the eleventh
grade students of Senior High School.
In conducting this research, descriptive qualitative method is used. The
object of the research is movie entitled Beauty and the Beast. The data are taken
from the dialogues performed by the characters in the movie. In analyzing data,
the researcher took some steps such as: watching the movie and downloading the
movie script, taking the utterances, transcribing the data, and giving coding each
datum. There are some procedures in analyzing the data. They are describing the
data into dialogue form, describing the context, analyzing the types of maxim
cooperative principle.
The result of data analysis shown that maxim of quantity occurred 9 times
or the percentage is 41%, maxim of quality occurred 3 times or 14%, maxim of
relation occurred 8 times or 36% and the last is maxim of manner performed by
the speaker is 2 times or 9%. There are 22 utterances contained cooperative
principle in Beauty and the Beast movie. The researcher concluded that the result
of analyze cooperative principle can be applied as a good materials in teaching
speaking. The application of analysis maxim Cooperative Principle used in
transactional expression at the Eleventh grade students of Senior High School.
