Abstract:
In learning second language, sometime the students make some error and mistake in using language rules. Error is caused by the competence factor. This means that the students have not understood yet the linguistic use of the language. Error cannot be corrected easily and quickly because the students do not realize that they make error. The study was carried out to analyze and to clasify the types of errors in WH-Question Formation. The objective of the research is aims to describe kinds of error made by tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Petanahan in the academic year of 2016/2017 in WH-Question Formation.
This thesis uses descriptive qualitative as the research design. The subject of the research is students of X IPS 1 class which consists of 21 students. The data were collected through written test. The test consists 20 items. In analyzing the data, the researcher classifies the students‟ errors based on Surface Taxonomy Strategy into omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering.
The result of the study shows that all students make four types of error, even though in different percentage. There are 356 omission (49.37%), 97 addition (13.45%), 235 misinformation (32.60%), and 33 misordering (4.58%). It is clear that the dominant error made by students is omission.
