Abstract:
English has been taught in Indonesia for many years. However the result has
not been satisfying. In Junior High School, students have to learn how to express
the event on the past by using simple past tense. The objective of this research is to
find out whether there is any effectiveness of using diary in teaching simple past
tense in recount text to eighth grade students of SMP N 4 Purworejo.
This research is carried out at SMP N 4 Purworejo. As the sample, the
researcher uses 62 students of the total population. The researcher uses purposive
sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher uses test as the instrument.
There are pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher uses t-test
formula.
The result of data computation indicates that the mean score of the post-test
of experimental group is higher than the mean score of post-test of control group
(80.52 > 68.52). In addition, the result of t-value is 5.71. Then, the researcher
consults the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance
and the degree of freedom is 1,697. It means that t-value is higher than the t-table
(5.71 > 1.697) and it means that Ha is accepted. It can be concluded that diary as
media in teaching simple past tense of recount text is effective.
