Abstract:
The main objectives of this research are to know the students’
speaking skill and to find out whether the use of guessing game is effective
or not in teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4
Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017.
This research was classified as an experimental research with non
equivalent control group design. Moreover, this research was conducted by
using technique in processing the data and getting the result. In this
research, the researcher took 64 students which are divided into control (X
Bahasa, 32 students) and experimental class (X Mipa 2, 32 students) at the
tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Purworejo in the academic year of
2016/2017 as the sample. The researcher conducted pre-test and post-test
to gain data. The researcher uses guessing game as a technique to teach
speaking. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
The average of post-test of experimental group is 68.59 which
were higher than the average of post-test of control class is 63.28. The ttest
result (2.126) was higher than t-table (2.000). Since t-test was higher
than t-table, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that guessing game is
effective in teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4
Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017.
