Abstract:
The objectives of the study were to know the students’ vocabulary mastery
at the eighth grade students of SMP N 12 Purworejo in the academic year of
2016/2017 and to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery
and students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade students of SMP N 12 Purworejo
in the academic year of 2016/2017.
In this research the researcher used random sampling in taking the sample
because of the limitation of time. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade
students of SMP N 12 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The
researcher took 30 students of class VII C. The researcher used multiple choices
and small group as the test to collect the data. Then, the researcher analyzed the
data result by manual calculation and SPSS 16.0.
The research result showed that the mean of vocabulary test was 70.04.
Meanwhile, the mean of speaking test was 64.16. So, it mean that both of
vocabulary test and speaking test were included in good category. From that
explanation, the correlation between students vocabulary mastery and students’
speaking skill at the eighth grade students of SMP N 12 Purworejo in the
academic year of 2016/2017 was positive and significant correlation, it shows that
coefficient correlation between two variables is 0.702 and this more than 0, so the
correlation between two variables is positive, and r value is higher than r table, it
is 0.702> 0.361, so Ha is accepted or it can be said significant.
