Abstract:
The aim of this research is to identify the types of directive speech acts used by the characters in the The BFG film, to know what the most of directive speech act used by the characters in the The BFG film, to describe the application of directive speech acts used by the characters in the The BFG film in teaching speaking. This research employes descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research is used to emphasize on describing the phenomenon in its content by interpreting the data.
Qualitative data are taken in the form of words (spoken and written) and visual images (observed or creatively produced). The Primary data are the utterances containing the speech acts of directive uttered by the characters in The BFG film. The objects of this research are the types of directive speech acts which consist of ordering, commanding, requesting, questioning, suggesting, forbidding and inviting used by the main character of the film.
The result shows that there are 235 utterances which categorized as directive speech act. Among those types of directive speech acts, questioning is the most frequently used by the characters in the film. The percentage is 48,09%. And then, Ordering that is 20,85%, forbidding 9,79%, commanding 8,94%, requesting 8,51%, and suggesting 3,83%. The researcher applies directive speech acts using film as a method to improve speaking skills of Senior High School learners. So the researcher concludes the characters in the film were more frequent in using direct directive speech act and hope this thesis could make deep understanding in pragmatic especially the speech act of directive.
