The Correlation Study Between Student’s Reading Interest Toward Their Vocabulary Mastery at the Seventh Grade of SMP N 31 Purworejo In The Academic Year Of 2016/2017

Abstract

Vocabulary and reading cannot be separted, because both of them relate to each other. By having and mastering vocabulary, we will know the meaning of vocabulary in the context. It can also help to avoid making mistake in understanding. Vocabulary is very importance to reading interest. Readers cannot understand that they are reading without knowing what the most of the word mean. As the student’s learn to read more advance texts, they must learn the meaning of the words. The aim of this research is to know whether the correlation study between student’s reading interest toward their vocabulary mastery SMPN 31 of Purworejo in the academic year 2016/2017. In collecting the data, the researcher uses test and questionnaire. The researcher takes the data from the seventh grade at SMPN 31 Purworejo. In analyzing the data the researcher used descriptive quantitative data analysis. The population of the research is the seventh grade students of SMP N 31 Purworejo in the academic year of 2016/2017. The sample is 31 students. Sample is taken using purposive. sampling technique. The result shows that the mean score of reading interest is higher than the mean score of vocabulary mastery (59.35<66.52). In addition, the result of t-value is 0.474. Then the researcher consults the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of freedom is 2.036. It shows that t-value is higher that t-table (60.07>11.07 It means that there is a significant correlation between the vocabulary mastery and reading interest.
