dc.description.abstract English has been taught in every level school in Indonesia as a foreign language from kindergarten until university level. Writing is one language skill is very important to learn because writing as a process to get product is influenced by some elements such as vocabularies, grammar, organization, content, and mechanic The objective of this study was to find out whether using authentic material effective or not for teaching writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Petanahan in the academic year 2016/2017. The research was being carried out at SMA N 1 Petanahn from 24th April to 9th Mei 2017. It was an Experimental research. In this research, the researcher took the data from the tenth grade students IPS 1 and IPS 3 as the sample of the research. The class IPS 1 was an experimental group and class IPS 3 was a control group. The experimental group consist of 28 students and control group consist of 28 students. In collecting the data, the researcher uses test as the instrument. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting data, the researcher made some step: (1) giving pre-test both of the group (2) giving treatment to the experimental group (3) giving explanation of the material to the control group (3) giving post-test both of the groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test. After collecting the data and analyzing them, the researcher presented the result of the research. Then result of the mean score of post test of experimental group was higher than to the mean score of post test control group (78.64 > 66.50). In addition, the result of t-value was 6.45. then, the researcher consulted the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of freedom was 2.000. It shows that t-value was higher than t-table (6.45>2.000). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that using authentic material for teaching writing descriptive text towards the students achievement in their writing skill at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Petanahan in the academic year of 2016/2017 is effective. en_US
