dc.description.abstract This research is correlation quantitative study about students’ reading speed and their reading comprehension on narrative text at eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Mirit in the academic year 2016/2017. The objectives of the study are to describe how fast the students reading speed and to describe how is the students reading comprehension ability on narrative text at eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Mirit. And also to describe the correlation between students reading speed and their reading comprehension on narrative text at eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Mirit. The population of the research is the eleventh grade students in SMA N 1 Mirit in the academic year 2016/2017. The sampling process was administered by applying total sampling technique. There were 98 students of eleventh grade and the researcher took 98 students as the sample. The researcher administered two kinds of test, namely reading speed test and reading comprehension test. The reading speed test was in spoken form and the reading comprehension was in written form and used multiple choice questions. The instrument used for measuring students’ reading speed and their reading comprehension was in related or not. The results of this study showed that the mean score of students reading speed is 160.53 WPM. It means that students reading speed has slow category. Then, students reading comprehension showed that the mean score is 67.04. It means that the students reading comprehension has good category. Besides, the hypothesis testing in this research showed that t computation is higher than t table =4.6655> 1.988. It means that Ha accepted and Ho rejected so that it is could be said that the correlation was significant. Besides, if the researcher consider that between reading speed and reading comprehension have opposite direction, meanwhile reading speed has slow category and reading comprehension has good category, so it is cannot be said that the correlation is positive, but the correlation is negative. Considering the explanation before, it means that there is negative correlation between students reading speed and their reading comprehension on narrative text at eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Mirit in the academic year 2016/2017. en_US
