The Analysis of Directive Utterances Found in the Brave Movie and its Application in Teaching Speaking at the Tenth Grade Students of Senior High School

dc.description.abstract Directive is one of speech act. Directive utterances are those in which the speaker tries to get the addressee to perform some act or refrain from performing an act. Based on Kreidler theory in semantic, there are three kinds of directive utterance: command, request and suggestion. The objectives of this research are to know the kinds of directive utterances found in the Brave movie as well as the application of the study in teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of Senior High School. In conducting the research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from the dialogues in the movie and they are explained descriptively. The steps of collecting data are watching the movie, reading the script, taking the utterance, giving a code for the data and organize the data into data sheet. To analyze the data the researcher followed some procedure. The procedure are reducing the data that is not needed, classifying data, analyzing and interpreting the data based on the theory, as well as presenting the result of analyzing data descriptively. The characters of Brave movie performed 83 utterances categorized as directive utterance which divided into 75 utterances (90.36 % data) belongs to command, 6 utterances (7.29 % data) belongs to request and 2 utterances (2.41% data) belongs to suggestion. The kinds of directive utterance can be applied in teaching speaking with material expression of command at the tenth grade students of Senior High School. Finally the researcher hopes this research will be useful for the students to enrich their knowledge. It is suggested for the teacher to give the student more knowledge about directive utterance to enrich their ability in communication. The researcher also hopes to other researcher to continue the study of directive utterance in different objects. en_US
