Abstract:
The objectives of this research are: 1) To describe the student’s speaking ability at
tenth grade students of SMK Batik Perbaik Purworejo 2) To find out whether
there is or not realia is effective in teaching speaking descriptive text at the tenth
grade of SMK Batik Perbaik Purworejo. The hypothesis of this study is the use of
realia is effective in teaching speaking of descriptive text for the tenth grade
students of SMK Batik Perbaik Purworejo in the academic year 2016/2017.
In this research, the population is the tenth grade of SMK Batik Perbaik
Purworejo. The number of the population was 239 students. In taking the sample,
the researcher used purposive sampling technique. Class X TKJ was chosen as a
experimental class who were taught by using realia and X PM1 who taught
without realia. The research design used quasi-experimental research. The
instrument used to collect the data is speaking test or oral test. The technique to
analyze the data as t-test formula. It is used to determine whether or not there was
significant different between the average score of experimental and control class.
The average of post- test of experimental class is 67.33 it is belonged to good
category which were higher than the average of post- test of control class is 59.46
it is belong to sufficient category. Since the result is proved by the t-test value
which 4.169 at the significant level 0.00. it means that there is significant because
the value is lower than 0.05.it can be concluded the hypothesis is accepted. It
means that Realia is effective in teaching speaking of descriptive text for the tenth
grade student of SMK Batik Perbaik Purworejo in the academic year 2016/2017.
Based on the result of this research, the researcher suggests that realia can be used
as alternative media in teaching speaking of speaking of descriptive text, in order
that the students can more understand and interested in learning activity especially
in learning of English.
