Abstract:
The research were quantitative research with quasi experimental as the
design of control and experiment class and the participants are first grade SMP N
36 Purworejo. The objective of the study is to decide out the effectiveness of
using authentic material in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text
atfirst grade of SMP N 36 Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015.
The researcher took 64 students among of the population of 192 students in
the first grade students of SMP N 36 Purworejo in the academic year of
2014/2015 as the sample of the research. The instrument of this research is test.
The researcher got the data using authentic material for teaching reading
comprehension test. Then, the researcher calculates both manually and by using
SPSS version 17.
Based on the computation, the researcher found the mean of experimental
group was 74.25, and the mean score of control group was 67.31. The mean score
of experimental group is higher than the mean score of the control group
(74.25>67.31).
The finding shown of t-test was 4.81. Then, the researcher consults to
critical value of t-table using the 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree
of freedom is 31. It show that the t-value is higher than t-table (4.81>1.99). It
means that there us effectiveness of using authentic material for teaching reading
comprehension of descriptive text at the first grade of SMPN 36 Purworejo in the
academic year of 2014/2015.
