dc.description.abstract The writer conducted this study based on several problems as the background of this study. The tenth grade students of SMP N 1 Kutowinangun have several problems occur during their English learning activities. Such as the students think that English is difficult, the environment that does not support students to learn English, less of media and monotonous teaching which used by the teacher and sometimes, the teaching technique makes the students get bored. Therefore, the writer determine objective of the study in this study, which is to find out the effectiveness of using Pair-work in improving speaking ability in the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Kutowinangun in the academic year of 2015/2016. The writer used experimental research in this research. She used purposive sampling in taking the sample because of the limitation of time and budget. The subject of the study is the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Kutowinangun in the academic year of 2015/2016. The writer took 31 students of class VIIB as experimental group and 31 students of class VIIA as control class for being the sample. The writer uses oral test by asking the students to perform story telling based on the picture given. The research itself, and test as part of it, conducted start from May 3rd 2016 to May 18th 2016. The researcher analyzed the data result by manual and SPSS 16.0.The research result shows that the mean of post test for control group is 71 and the standard deviation is 3.43. Therefore, the students of control group have a good result on their speaking since the mean is included in good category. Meanwhile, the mean of experimental group is 77.74 and the standard deviation is 4.04. It means that the students of VIIB as experimental group included in good category. They have a good result on their speaking. Based on the explanation above, teaching speaking using pair work is effective. Since the result is proved by the result of t-test. The t-value is 8.179, The significance level (Sig.(2-tailed)) is 0.000. The calculations of the mean scores of experimental and control group are 77.74 and 71.00. If we compare those two means, it clears that the mean of experimental group is higher than the mean of control group. It indicates that treatment is effective. Hence, the Pair-work strategy is recommended as an alternative strategy in teaching speaking. en_US
