The Analysis of Positive Politeness Strategy in “The Giver” movie and its Application in English Language Teaching Speaking

Abstract

This research focuses on the positive politeness strategy in The Giver movie. The objectives of this research are to describe the strategies of politeness found in The Giver movie and explain the application of positive politeness strategy in The Giver movie in English Language Teaching Speaking. This research is a descriptive qualitative research because it is aimed at analyzing the positive politeness in a movie. The researcher makes a study about the strategy of positive politeness based on Brown and Levinson‟s theory; collecting data by watching The Giver movie, covering the utterances containing positive politeness said by the characters in the movie, and classifying the data based on the types of positive politeness strategies. From the result of the data analysis, the researcher drawn conclusions, they are 15 types of positive politeness strategy in The Giver movie, namely: Notice, attend to hearer, Exaggerate, Intensify interest to the hearer, Use in-group identity markers, Seek agreement, Avoid disagreement, Presuppose/rise/assert common ground, Joke, Assert or presuppose speaker‟s knowledge and concern for the hearer‟s wants, Offer, promise, Be optimistic, Include both the speaker and the hearer in the activity, Give (or ask for) reasons, Assume or assert reciprocity, Give gifts to the hearer. The application of this study can be applied in teaching speaking in the XII grade of senior high school semester 1. The material which is closely related with politeness is expressions. Teacher can use utterances in the movie to teach expressions such as suggesting, requesting, complaining and commanding.
