Abstract:
Reading is one language skills in learning English should be mastered by students. Read in English is not easy task undertaken by most students because English is their foreign language. In high school, students are still facing some difficulties in reading technique. Marking the text strategy is one of strategy that used in teaching reading comprehension of students to be active in comprehending the texts. They giving number the paragraph, circle key terms, and underline an authors’ argument or claim. Those make students can comprehend easier because they could be active to find the important information of the text.
The aim of this study is to determine whether or not there is effectiveness of using marking the text strategy in teaching reading comprehension in class VIII MTs Ma’arif NU Sidomukti in the academic year 2015/2016. In this study, researcher took 50 students of class VIII MTs Ma’arif NU Sidomukti in 2015/2016 academic year as a sampling. Researchers conducted a pre-test and post-test. Statistically, the researchers analyzed the data by using t-test.
The results showed that the use of marking the text strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension and make a positive contribution to the students' skill to comprehend in class VIII MTs Ma’arif NU Sidomukti in the academic year 2015/2016, because it was found that the mean of experimental group was 78.20 while the mean of control group was 71.68 in the post-test, t-test value is 8.81 and table t is 2.00. This means that the value of t value is higher than t table (8.81> 2.0) in a significant level of 0.05. Calculations show that Ho is rejected and Ha accepted.
