Abstract:
The aims of this research is to describes whetherthere is effectiveness of
using flash cards in teaching simple past tense .The hypothesis of this research is
aimed to find out whetherthere is significant effect or not of using flash cards in
teaching simple past tense.
This research is quantitative research with experimental design. In this
research, the population is the eight grade students of SMP NurulMuttaqin with the
total number of population is204students. The sample of this research is 68
students, 34 students as control group and 34 students as experimental group. The
researcher uses purposive sampling in taking the samplebecause of limited time.
The researcher uses test to get the data ofsimple past tense mastery of the
students. The researcher uses descriptive statistics and inferential analysis using
SPSSin techniques of analyzing data. The researcher analyzes using descriptive
statistics to find out the value of the mean, median, mode, range, standard
deviation and variance, whereas inferential analysis is used to prove the
hypothesis test in the significance level 0.05.
The result shows that the mean score of pre-test of control group is 62.35
besides the mean score of post-test of control group is 63.18.The mean score of
pre-test of experimental group is 62.71 and the mean score of post-test of
experimental group is 68.12. By comparing the mean score of both groups, it is
clear that the mean score of post-test from experimental group is higher than the
mean score of post test from control group. The increasing value of experimental
group is also higher than the increasing value of control group. In addition, the
result of t-test based on the computation of SPSS using Independent T-test
showsthatthe result of sig. 2-tailed is 0.010. it means that there is significance
difference between post-test resultof control group and experimental group.
According to the result of the t-test, it can be concluded that the hypothesis
alternative “the use of flash cards is effective in teaching simple past tense at the
eight grade students of SMP Nurul Muttaqin Purworejo in the academic year of
2015/2016” is accepted.
