dc.description.abstract The aim of the research is to know wether Semantic Mapping technique is effective or not to teaching reading descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Nusawungu in the academic year 2015/2016. It is expected that the result of the study will provide a deeperunderstanding about using Semantic Mapping technique as a teaching technique for English teachers and also for the readers. In order to achieve the objective in this study, the researcher will design a quasiexperiment using pre-test and post-test. The population of this study is the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Nusawungu at the academic year 2015/2016. The sample of the study is H class as experimental group that consist of 32 students, and B class as control group that consist of 32 students. Before the experiment was conducted, the students were given a pre-test for both groups. At the end of the experiment, each group was given a post-test. The result of the study showed that the students’ progress of experimental group in mastering reading ability is good. The result of the mean score of posttest of experimental group was higher than the mean score of post-test of control group (69.00>64.37). In addition, the result of z-value was 2.021. Then, the researcher consulted the critical value on the the z-table using (0.05) alpha level significance an d the degree of freedom was 1.96. It shows that z-value was higher than z-table (2.021>1.96). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that using semantic mapping technique in teaching reading descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Nusawungu in the academic year 2015/2016 is effective. en_US
