Abstract:
Communication has function in connecting some ideas in order to convey
information. Not only conveying information, people do communication in order to
share their feelings also. When people do communication, they produce some
utterances. The utterances spoken here calls speech acts. Speech acts are utterances
that serve function in communication. Speech acts make actions that are performed
through utterances. This research will explain and describe speech acts found in the
characters of a film entitled Kung Fu Panda 3. The goal of this research is to find out
the types of speech acts and to explain the application of speech acts found in Kung
Fu Panda 3 film in teaching speaking.
To analyze the types of speech acts, the researcher uses qualitative research
because the researcher would like to describe about the types of speech acts found in
Kung Fu Panda 3 film. The object of this research is the utterances spoken by the
characters in Kung Fu Panda 3 film. The data of this research is taken from the
utterance used by the characters in Kung Fu Panda 3 film and the source of data is
the film itself. The data is classified into the types of speech acts. The speech acts
performed by the all characters are examined by describing the content and context
of the expression. The researcher uses coding data technique to analyze the data.
The result of this research shows that there are five types of speech acts in
Kung Fu Panda 3 film namely declaratives, representatives, expressive, directives
and commissives. There are 607 speech acts found consisting of 2 declarative speech
acts (0.3%), 120 representative speech acts (19.8%), 65 expressive speech acts
(10.7%), 394 directive speech acts (64.9%) and 26 commisive speech acts (4.3%).
The researcher concludes that speech acts found in “Kung Fu Panda 3” film can be
applied in functional skills materials in teaching speaking in senior high school.
