Abstract:
The objective of the study is to describe whether or not the use of herringbone
technique is effective or not in teaching reading narrative text at the eighth grade of SMP
Negeri 1 Sadang in the academic year of 2015/2016.
The type of the research is experimental research with pretest posttest control group
design. The population of this research is the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sadang in the
academic year of 2015/2016. The subject of this study consists of 64 students which are
divided into control group (class VIII A, 32 students) and Experimental group (class VIII B,
32 students). Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, the researcher
made some steps: (1) giving pre-test both of groups (2) giving treatment to the experimental
group (3) giving post-test both of the groups. To analyze the data, the researcher uses t-test.
The result shows that the use of herringbone technique is effective in teaching reading
narrative text. The researcher counted the data using t-test method, the mean score are found
that pre-test of control group is 68.500, and post test of control group has mean score
72,750. Moreover, the mean score of pre-test of experimental group was 65.750, and posttest
of experimental group is 77.125. The researcher concluded that the students of
experimental group have well on their reading narrative text. The computation of t-test
shows that the Ha is accepted. It can be proven by the value of t-test is 3.089. Then the ttable
is 2.000. 3.089>2.000. If the value of t-test is higher than t-table, the alternative
hypothesis can be state that is effective to use herring technique in teaching reading
narrative text at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sadang in the academic year of
2015/2016.
