Abstract:
This is a quantitative research with quasi experimental as its design. The
aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using Four Square Writing
method in teaching writing narrative text. Here, the researcher has question to be
answered. Is using Four Square Writing Method effective in teaching writing
narrative text at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Purworejo in the academic year of
2015/2016?
The population of the research is the tenth grade students of SMA N 1
Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 which consists of 345 students and
the amount of the sample is 58 students. Sample is taken by using purposive
sampling technique. The independent variable of the research is using Four
Square Writing method and the dependent variable of the research is the students’
writing narrative text ability. The instrument that is used to get the data is essay
test. The techniques of analyzing the data are descriptive statistics in finding
mean, standard deviation, mode, median; and inferential analysis is used to prove
the hypothesis test.
The result shows that using Four Square Writing method in teaching
writing narrative text at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Purworejo in the academic
year of 2015/2016 is effective. It can be seen from the mean score of experimental
class that is higher than the mean score of control class (80.21 > 71.30). It
indicates that writing narrative text ability in experimental class categorized
excellent and in control class categorized good. It is also proven from the result of
z-test which shows that the value of zvalue (5.135) is higher than the value of ztable
in significance degree 5% (1.96) or 5.135 > 1.96. It can be concluded that using
Four Square Writing method is effective in teaching writing narrative text at the
tenth grade of SMA N 1 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016.
