dc.description.abstract Modality is one of material study in certain subjects of the college, exactly in Applied Linguistics of English subject. Modality tells about speaker’s or writer’s attitudes and it is explore about meanings of utterance, such as explain about kinds system of types of modality and the meaning and the use of modal verbs. The meaning and the use of modal verbs can used in learning activity, exactly at Vocational High School in teaching Grammar in English subject. Students learn about modal verbs to know the use and the meaning of modal verbs. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The researcher takes the main source of the data that is a movie script entitled Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and data of research of this research is system of types of modality and modal meanings and modal uses. The result shows that 1) there are four kinds of system of types of modality used by the main characters in this movie. Those are 23 probabilities (33,8 %), 8 usualities (11,7 %), 23 obligations (33,8 %), and 14 inclinations (20,7 %.). Then, 2) there are 9 modal verbs used including must (twice), can (16 times), could (7 times), will (17 times), would (5 times), may (only once), might (only once), shall (only once), and should (6 times); and there are 13 meaning used including 6 abilities, 14 possibilities, 2 wishes, 2 offers, 8 askings, 6 obligations, 3 requests, 1 insistence, 2 characteristics, 3 permissions, 2 suggestions, 6 willingness, and 1 prediction. Then, 3) the application of modality` used by the main characters can be applied in teaching Grammar at the tenth grade students of Vocational High School. en_US
