Abstract:
The Objective of this research is to find out whether or not the use of word
building game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh
grade of SMP N 3 Salaman in the academic year of 2015/2016.
The researcher applies quantitative method to discuss and find out the
problem appearing in this study. This study can be categorized as experimental
research. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of SMP N
3 Salaman and the researcher took 52 students as the sample which divided into
two classes. The researcher uses purposive sampling to gain the data of the
research. In getting the data, the researcher used test as an instrument (pre test and
post test). The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive statistic analysis
(mean, median, modus, SD, and the highest and lowest score) and inferential
analysis (test of normality, test of homogeneity of variance and test of
hypothesis).
The result of the research showed that word building game is effective to
improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The improvement can also be seen by the
result of t-value is 4.8. Using 5% level of significance and the degree of freedom
is 42. The t-table shown that the value is 4.83. It shows that the t-value is higher
than t-table (4.83>2.000). The mean of experimental group is 76.54 and the mean
of control group is 67.31(76.54 > 67.31). It can be seen from the result of post test
of experimental group and control group. So, it can be concluded that using word
building game to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade
students of SMP N 3 Salaman in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective
