dc.description.abstract The objectives of this study is to describe The Effectiveness of Using Small Group Discussion in Teaching Speaking at The Second Grade Students of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the Academic Year 2015/2016. It is aimed at finding out whether or not there is effective. This research is called a quantitative research with an experimental design. In this research, the population is the second grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo with the total number of population is 227 students. The sample of this research is 28 students. The researcher took the sample by using purposive sampling and the instrument which is used to get data is oral test. The techniques of analyzing data are descriptive statistics and inferential analysis use SPSS 16.0. The researcher analyzed the data using descriptive statistics to find mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation and variance, whereas inferential analysis is used to prove the hypothesis test in the significance level 0.05. The t-test result of post-test based on the computation of SPSS show that t value is lower than t table, t-value < t-table (-8.322<-2.005) and p-value < α (0.00<0.05) at the 95% confidence interval of the differences. It is significance because the Sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.00<0.05). From the calculation of pretest and posttest mean, the researcher get 61.29 as mean of pretest and 72.43 as mean of posttest. Comparing two means above, it is clear that the mean of the posttest is higher than the means of pretest. The difference between two the means is 11.14. it is indicates that the treatment is effective. Based on the result of this research, it means that the method which is used by the researcher is effective for teaching speaking of the students of SMP Negeri 33 Purworejo. Therefore, the researcher’s hyphothesis with 0.95 or 95% of significance level is accepted and null hyphothesis (Ho) is rejected. en_US
