The research paper aims at finding out and describing the language
learning strategies on reading used by the eighth semester students of English
Department in Purworejo Muhammadiyah University. In this research, the
researcher also analyzed and described the most frequent strategy on reading and
the reasons why do the students use certain strategy.
The subjects of this research were the eighth semester students of English
Department in Purworejo Muhammadiyah University that consisted of 30
students. To analyze the language learning strategies on reading used by the
eighth semester students, the researcher used descriptive qualitative analysis based
on the language learning strategies proposed by Oxford. The researcher as the
main instrument used two supporting instruments. They were questionnaires
related to language learning strategies on reading and the interview to confirm the
students’ answers on the questionnaires. To analyze the data gained from the
questionnaires and interview, the researcher used three steps (data reduction, data
display, and drawing conclusion).
From this research, there are three points that can be discovered: 1) there
are six learning strategies on reading. Each strategy has different characteristic
and use. It gives the good effect to the students in learning reading. 2) Affective
strategy is the most frequent strategies used by the eighth semester students of
English Department in Purworejo Muhammadiyah University. 3) There are many
reasons about using the most frequent strategy on reading and every student has
different reasons in applying that strategy. |
