dc.description.abstract The aim of this research is to know whether using numbered heads together strategy is effective in teaching speaking at the eighth grade students of SMP N 31 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. This research is classified as an experimental research. Moreover, this research is conducted by using quantitative technique in processing the data and getting the result. Therefore, the type of this research is pre-experimental quantitative research. The population involves the eighth grade students of SMP N 31 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. The total number of the population is 192 students. The total number of sample is 32 students that is taken from one class. The writer uses the Incidental Sampling to take the sample of the research. The research instruments are pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Technique of analysis data is using descriptive statistic and inferential statistic. Based on the results and findings of the research, the mean of the pre-test is 67.75, and the mean of post-test is 55.44. It shows that the mean score of post-test result is higher than mean of pre-test result. It means that using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy was successful to teach speaking at the eighth grade students of SMP N 31 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. From the analysis data, the researcher concludes that NHT strategy is effective to teach speaking. As the fact, the result of t-value is 8.61 based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is 2.04 the result of computation shows that t-value is higher than table, that is 8.6>2.04 so it can be stated that the use of NHT strategy to teach speaking at the eighth grade students of SMP N 31 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective. en_US
