dc.description.abstract English, as the most popular worldwide language in the world, is taught in every school level, including in Indonesia. English subject consists of four skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is important for the students to be good in speaking English. However, there are some obstacles faced by the students. Therefore, it needs an appropriate strategy to improve students’ speaking skill. One of the strategies that keeps students engaged and active in learning activity is Talking Chips. Talking Chips ensures that every student in a group would have the same chance to speak, so that it can improve students’ speaking skill. This research is classified as experimental research. The goal of this research is to find out the effectiveness of Talking Chips strategy in teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Klirong in the academic year of 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher took one class as the sample that is class X.1 which consists of 32 students. The researcher used test as the instrument. In collecting the data, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to the samples. The researcher then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test. The result of the research shows that the mean score of pre-test is 52.69. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test is 67.00. To see whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected, t-value is consulted to t-table at the 0.05 significance level. It shows that t-table was -2.04 and t-value was -9.109. It means that t-value was lower than t-table, that was -9.109 < -2.04. Therefore, it can be stated that the hypothesis “ Talking Chips strategy is effective in teaching speaking at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Klirong in the academic year of 2015/2016” is accepted. en_US
