Abstract:
Reading is one of the four basic skills that must be mastered among the
junior high school students. Reading mastery affects the whole students’
achievement in English learning. Students are insufficient in reading English. The
teacher can take some strategies in teaching reading, so it will help students to
read in effective and strategic way. One of teaching strategy is Question Answer
Relationship (QAR) Strategy for teaching reading comprehension and the purpose
is to improve the students reading comprehension ability.
The researcher used quantitative with experimental research. The objective
of the research is to describe whether teaching reading comprehension using QAR
strategy is effective or not. The population of this research was the eighth grade
students of MTs N Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016. Sample of this
research is two classes they are experimental group and control group. VIII A as
experimental group consist of 30 students, and VIII C as control group consist of
30 students. The sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling. The
researcher taught narrative text by using QAR strategy to the experimental group
and using common way of teaching to the control group. The researcher used
descriptive analysis as the technique of analyzing data
The researcher found that the result of t-value is 4.005. Based on the 0.05
significant levels, the value of t-table is 2.05. The result of computation shows
that t-value is higher than t-table, that is 4.005>2.05. Another fact shows that the
technique used is effective. It is shown by the mean of experimental group that is
higher than the mean of control group. In the experimental group, the mean is
76.83. on the contrary, the mean of control group is 68.50. since t test value is
higher than t test table, the alternative hypothesis can be stated that the use of
QAR strategy for teaching reading comprehension at the eighth grade students of
MTs N Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016 is effective.
