dc.description.abstract English is an international language that most widely used language by people in the world in both oral and written communication. For English language learners, speaking is the most crucial skill among the other skills. Students who have strong oral communication, they can participate easily in the second language environment. To have credibility in speaking, students have to study the components of target language, in this case English language. Among the components of speaking, grammar is the most important component in speaking. It means by having good grammar students can speak in clear and effective manner since grammar is the rule of language and how the sentences constructed. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is positive and significant correlation between grammar mastery and speaking ability at 4th semester of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the Academic year of 2015/2016. The sample of this study were 27 students. The method used in this study was quantitative method and the technique used in this study was a co-relational technique. In collecting the data, grammar test and speaking test was used in this research. In assessing students’ grammar mastery, the researcher conducted multiple choice test to the students and it is consist of 30 items. While in assessing students’ speaking ability, the researcher gave the students picture-cued story telling task. There is a positive and significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking ability of the fourth semester of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah university of Purworejo in the academic year 2015/2016. It can be seen from the result of rcounted is 0.637 based on the 0.005 significant level, the value of the rtabel is 0.381. The computation showed that the rcounted is higher than rtable that is 0.637>0.381. It also indicates that the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking ability is high. Based on the fact above, the hypothesis is accepted. en_US
