Abstract:
This research is conducted to know whether group grid technique is effective
or not to improve students’ mastery of simple present tense at the eighth grade
students of SMP N 19 Purworejo in the academic year 2015/2016.The design of
this research is an experimental quantitative research using pre-test, treatment, and
post-test.
In collecting data, the researcher uses pre-test and post-test. In this research,
the researcher takes 61 students as sample from VIII D as experimental group and
VIII E as control group. The researcher uses group grid technique to teach simple
present tense. In analyzing the data, the researcher employs descriptive analysis
and inferential analysis. The researcher uses Mann-Whitney u-test to test the
hypothesis.
The result of this research shows that group grid technique is effective in
teaching simple present tense at the eighth grade students of SMP N 19 Purworejo
in the academic year of 2015/2016. It is proven by the result of z-value is 2.88.
Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of z-table is 1,96, the computation
showed that z-value is higher than z-table, which is 2.88>1.96. The mean score of
experimental group pre-test is 55.23 while the mean score post-test is 79.10. It can
be seen from gained score control group and experimental group which is given
the treatment. The experimental group score is higher than control group score.
