There are many methods in teaching speaking. One of them is Fishbowl
method. Fishbowl method is a format discussion that some students make discussion
circle and other students make listener circle around of discussion. The objectives of
this study are: (1) to describe the students’ ability in speaking after being taught by
using Fishbowl method; (2) to find out whether the use of Fishbowl method is
effective or not to improve speaking ability at the eleventh grade stdents of SMKN 1
Karanganyar.
In this research, the researcher took 72 students of the eleventh grade of
SMKN 1 Karanganyar in the academic year of 2015/2016 as the sample. The
technique of collecting the data were oral test about analytical exposision in pre-test,
treatment, and post test. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.
The result of the test showed that the mean of experimental group was 75.56.
It means that the eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Karanganyar were categorized
as good in improving speaking ability using Fishbowl method. Meanwhile, the t-test
obtained is 4.69. Since t-test is higher than t-table (4.69>1.99), so the hypothesis is
accepted. It means that teaching speaking by using Fishbowl method is effective and
give positive contribution toward the students’ speaking ability to the eleventh grade
students of SMKN 1 Karanganyar in the academic year of 2015/2016. The teacher
can apply Fishbowl method in teaching speaking as the alternative way to teach
speaking that easier to understand by the students.
