Abstract:
In this research, the researcher applies a descriptive qualitative research. The
aim of this research is to describe the ability of the fourth semester students’of
English education program in the understanding participial phrase.
The respondent were the fourth semester students of English Education
Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year of
2015/2016. The data was taken twice, Sunday 26th April and Thrusday 9th of May
2016. The total respondents was 58 students, the researcher used multiple choice
test. Test is used to measure the students’ mastery of participial phrase.
The result shows that, from 58 students in 4th semester in A class and B
class, there are 3 students categorized as very good ( 5.17%), 5 categorized as
good (8.62%), 19 students categorized as fair (32.76%), 26 categorize as poor
(44.83%), and 5 students categorized as very poor (8.62%). In the concequences
of this low mastery, it needs a breaktrough to bring forward the improvement of
students ability, especially in using participial phrase.
